Newbie's GIS / how to convert latitude n longitude coordinate to rso??
« on: March 15, 2008, 04:32:32 PM »
Hi,

In this case, your are mentioning about another problem which is converting from RSO to Cassini.

As for the WGS84 to RSO, ArcGIS 9.2 supports Kertau and Timbalai very well. This would mean that the conversion from RSO to WGS84 can be done either on the fly or using the ArcToollBox . Cassini is not supported by ArcGIS .

As for the conversion from Cassini to RSO, you can check here http://www.gis.com.my/scripts.htm . Item "3" of the list would direct you the appropriate link (not sure if the link is still working or not).

If it does not please let me know.

Just remember when making the conversion that you will never get a 100% precise conversion since all the coordinate systems are using general mathematical formulas that generate distortions when the are is too big.

I hope this would help.

Hi Adli,

In addition to the above said, I would advice you to use the decimal degrees in Google Earth by choosing from Tools--->Options , int eh dialog box choose 3D view Tab and select the "Decimal Degrees" Radio button.

One way would be to copy your data /points in a comma delimited file as below:

'#===============
Easting, Norting, Name, Details
101.751,3.15772, Ampang Point, Shopping Center
.
.
.
.
.

1. Open ArcCatalog and view your file.
2. Once you have done that, just drag and drop the txt file into ArcMap.
From the TOC, make sure you choose the source tab, right click on the text file and choose "display xy data" (if I am not mistaken)
3. Choose Easting for X and Northing for Y.

This should do the trick.

 ;)
