GIS Blogs / Extract Exif data from Jpeg picture online using FME Server
« on: October 28, 2011, 09:18:27 PM »
Hello all,

This is another article demonstrating how FME Server could be used in manipulating data online (or via the intranet). Obviously using FME Server was described in the first two articles. In this particular case, I have taken one of the pictures taken using my Nokia N8 camera enabling the Geo-Tagging function. I am sure that most of the phones that have a camera and a GPS module could do that for you.

You just have to log on to http://www.serveyourmaps.com:8080/fmeserver/services/fmedatadownload/Topology/jpeg2ogckml.fmw ; (username: builder, password: builder).
Click/expand on Topology repository, choose "jpeg2ogckml.fmw" click on "configure button", upload your picture (make sure it is geo-tagged) then run the workspace. It will return a link with location of a zip file containing the location of the place where you took the picture in the following formats:

Google Earth - KML
ESRI - ShapeFIle
MapInfo - TAB

By the same manner, we could had pushed the data to any RDBMS, GIS or CAD format (Oracle, SQLServer, MySQL, PostGresSQL, MSAcess, ESRI Geodatabase, DXF, DWG or DGN ...etc).

Have fun trying out this !

Cheers.

Hi all,

That was a long title wasn't it  :o?  Let me just catch my breath first.
I have decided to put up one small technical tutorial or article per week just to exercise my finger a bit. Speaking of exercise, this is a small sample that demonstrates the capabilities of FME through FME Server. Imagine that you have one thousand staff that have to use some software a couple of times a week and it is always the same thing they need to do.
In this scenario, let take a group of people who do digitizing jobs and at the end of the day, they need to check if their polygons in one single layer do not overlap. This is one of the topology rules set for the quality control.

Let's say if I have a layers containing polygons and someone messed up with my polygons and they are all intersecting which is not supposed to be the case.

I have highlighted the intersections in the picture below.

You just have to compress the files in one single zip file. in my case, the file name is IntersectSampleZ.shp (make sure you compress all the files not only the .shp file)

Then go to http://www.serveyourmaps.com:8080/fmeserver/

Log in with the following credentials:

username: builder
password: builder

Under Services; choose: Data Download ---> Topology ---> SelfIntersectinPolygons.fmw then DO NOT CLICK on the run button, instead, click on the "Configure" button as shown below:

This interface will appear:

Click on the browse button and select your zip file:

Click on the upload button to up0load it into the server

Your file is now uploaded as shown on this picture:

Select your file to be processed on pressing on "Choose Uploaded File" button.

In this case, because we are using a Shapefile, it is not necessary to select all the files. You just have to select the file with .shp only.

Once the data processed, you will be getting the results via email.

Please note that the data is periodically deleted from the server. In this specific case, we have chosen receive the results via email. FME Server will not send you the entire data, but a link to a zip file to be downloaded (smart huh). We could have unchecked the email function here and the results would have been as below:

I have tested this with other data which I have created and the results were good. Check this out:

Try it yourself ! Upload your own data.

I hope you will find this useful for your work.

Good luck.

GIS Blogs / Building Polygons online using FME Server
« on: August 13, 2011, 04:57:15 AM »
Dear All,

It has been a while since FME Server has been launched by Safe Software. Briefly it is more or less the same thing as FME Desktop except that it runs over the internet / Intranet. Look at the big picture; ROI (Return Of Investment) is huge. With one license you can preset many automated jobs to be run by the staff in you organization without messing up much (I do not mean that the staff always mess up things), but you can do this with one FME Desktop + one FME Server license. I have decided to create setup a small server (sorry about the SLOW server).

Someone asked the question yesterday if FME could build polygons. The answer is yes, you could just use FME Desktop to do that trough the Workbench. However, I will take it one step further doing that using the FME Server. In this case you don't need to own a Desktop license or any software, as long as you have a computer, an OS, a browser and an internet connection (and power supply obviously ;)).

Anyway, in this exercise, I have decided to create an example where people could build polygons online. The data must be in ShapeFile formats. You could just zip the files in one single compressed file, upload it on the server then request FME Server to process the data. Once done, the software will send you an email with the link where you could download the data.

First, log in to the website: http://www.ServeYourMaps.com:8080/fmeserver . Login using the following credentials:

Username: builder
Password: builder

In the next page, expand everything under Data Download Services

You should have something like this.

Click on the configure button.

In the picture above, I have numbered a couple of things that you need to set:

1. Type in your email address where you want the link to be sent (we do not register the email addresses for any use whatsoever  8))
2. Browse for the compressed ShapeFile in the zip file. Make sure you include all the files otherwize the job would fail.
3. Once the file chosen, make sure you upload it.
4. You must then choose the file to be processed. FME Server is smart enough to check what is inside the zip file, you just have to select the .shp file
5. MAKE SURE you add the extension length. This is the length by which the lines will be extended to make sure lines are closed; specifically in case of what some software call "undershoot". The distance must be in feature units. This parameter is very important since it allows you to close all the gaps. If the gaps are not closed then the software will ignore those lines.

Lastly, just run the application and happy building.

Feedbacks are welcome!!!

News / Esri Removes Usage Limits
« on: March 01, 2011, 04:38:38 PM »
Hi all,

I was surprised to see a couple of articles on the net with more or less the same title; "Esri Removes Usage Limits" (full article is available here ). Amazing enough, at the beginning of the article, the author says "Esri announced on Friday that they are lifting most " ...

Well, esri has also come to adopt OpenStreet into its family of base maps.

Take a look at the article.

Happy reading!
