Projection Conversion

Good morning,

Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Firdaus and after some years in the GIS industry I'm still a newbie whereas my forte is more into database :(

I'd like to ask some questions if I may. I'm working on a task to standardise geodata from multiple projections (inlcuding state Cassini, RSO etc) to either WGS84 or GDM2000.

In your point of view, is WGS84 knowingly for being widely used projections is a better option than GDM2000? I understand that many government agencies still not ready to use GDM2000.

Second thing is, projection conversion specifically state Cassini to WGS84. While I understand from the forum that there's already a tools can do that in ArcView 3.3, but since I'm using ArcGIS 9.3.1, is it compatible? Should I can't use this tool, is there a manual way to do this conversion?

I hope I won't bother much of your time on answering my newbie questions. Having said that, I'm really appreaciate you can guide me on this one. Thanks.

Dear Firdaus,

First things first, please be informed that you do not disturb at all.
Secondly, this coordinate system issue troubles every one in Malaysia from the private to public sector so you are not alone.

You should not bother about the Cassini issue unless you are using cadastral data from JUPEM. If you are using topo maps than, you should use Kertau 1948 (for west Malaysia) or Timbalai (for east Malaysia) coordinate system.

I would suggest to you not to use WGS84 for the basemap.

Please let me know if this helps.

Thanks for asking.
