Thanks for the help y'all. The problem was that Pathfinder Office was setup to export in 3d (Export Setup Properties --> Coordinate System Tab --> XYZ or XY). Without AV 3d Analyst, ArcView will not allow editing of 3d files. One can either run a script which converts a shapefile to a 2d file or, as I did, just select the 2d mode in PF Office and re-export the data. Then it works fine, and is editable.
