Thanks for the many replies, all correct! I've now been able to edit the
drawing with success.

Here's my summary

I was unable to edit the converted shapefile as it was in 3D and had a
Polyline Z, as created in CAD. It was converted into a 3D shapefiles in
ArcView and therefore could not be edited in ArcView. To enable the editing
of the drawing, l first had to convert the CAD drawing to 2D. I did this in
AutoCAD, but apparently there is a script called xyx2xy.ave (kept in the
ArcVoew samples sundirectory as part of its installation). Once in 2D and
converted to a shapefile the layer is editable!
I was also reminded to check the file wasn't read-only.
