Hello all, Thank you to all those who provided helpful responses. My question is: How to cut this piece of area from big one? These are the response: You could use the geoprocessing tools available with ArcView 3.1 and 3.2. First make a backup copy of the current shape file. Add the geoprocessing extension from the extensions menu. Use the clip function (this will only work if you have another file that is the size you want). Alternately, use the cut polygon function as follows: 1. make the theme you want to cut active 2. Choose start editing from the theme menu 3. Use the cut polygon function by clicking on the button with a dot on it (should be the right-most one on the lower button bar) and holding it - choose the next to bottom one from the drop down selections. 4. Place the cursor outside the polygon, drag to draw a line to make the cut. Double click to end the line. 5. click on the area you want to delete. Hit delete (on keyboard). repeat the above steps until you have the size you want. 6. Save the edits (under a different name) 7. Now use the geoprocessing wizard clip function to clip the remaining large shapefiles, DEMs based on your new polygon. All the files will now be the same size. Margaret Gooding In general the process is "clip" -- easy enough for the polygons and polylines (geoprocessing wizard or Xtools extension). I'm sure there's a similar process for DEMs. good luck. Kathi Hannaford, Union Co. GIS khannaford@unionco.org This can be accomplished working interactively in Arcview very easily: 1. make the them the only active theme. 2. working in a View document, make a rectangle using the feature selection tool, so that the rectangle surrounds all the features you wish to keep in your subset of the original. 3. under the "Theme" entry in the View document's menu interface, there is a "Convert to Shapefile..." entry. This will convert the collection of features you have selected into a new shapefile. It opens a dialog in which you specify the new theme's name and path to the directory where it will be stored. After creating the new shapefile, there will be a dialog asking whether you wish to add the newly-created theme to your view document. cheers, robert white Austin, Texas All above options work well with polygons, polyline, and points. I am still thinking about DEMs. Nguyen Quoc Dinh Physical Land Resources Programme Schoofslaan, 12. Room 196 1160 Brussels Belgium Phone: 32 2 629 5056 email: nguyen.quoc.dinh@vub.ac.be
